A.P. Verdict in 1977 and 1984 Elections

In A.P. politics, there are two instances, where A.P. has given completely different verdict when compared to the entire country. In 1977, when the entire country voted against Congress, in A.P., Congress won 41 seats out of 42. In 1984, after the death of Indira Gandhi, when the entire country voted for Congress Party, in A.P., it lost very badly. TDP and it's alliances won 36 seats and TDP became the Chief Opposition Party. That was the first time and probably the only time, when a regional party was the Chief Opposition Party.

During the emergency, Jalagam Vengalarao was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He has taken enough measures to reduce the impact of emergency in A.P. When all the leaders were arrested in the entire country, in A.P., he did not do the same thing. When Indira Gandhi asked him, why he was not arresting the leaders, he responded saying, why to give unnecessary importance and make them as big leaders by arresting them. Because of him only, in the elections after emergency, Congress won with a great majority in A.P.

Two and half months before the assassination of Indira Gandhi, she played major role in removing N.T.Rama Rao from C.M. post and gave support to Nadendla Bhaskar Rao to become C.M. After one month, When Nadendla Bhaskara Rao was asked to prove his majority in the Assembly, he could not prove and N.T.Rama Rao became Chief Minister again. N.T.Rama Rao got the sympathy that, he was unfairly removed from C.M. post by Indira Gandhi. Because of that, even after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, A.P. people voted for N.T.Rama Rao.
